Technical Datasheet
TEGO Carbomer 340 FD (Carbomer) is a benzene-free acrylic acid polymer engineered for rapid dispersion in water. Serving as a viscosity adjuster, emulsion stabilizer, and gelling agent, it offers excellent emulsion stabilization and viscosity-building performance across a wide pH range. Its high bulk density and low dusting properties simplify processing, making it particularly suitable for clear water- or alcohol-based gels, lotions, creams, and sprays.
Key Properties:
- Fast Dispersion:
Quickly dispersed in water, accelerating processing compared to traditional carbomers. - Wide pH Compatibility:
Effective across a broad pH range, enhancing formulation versatility. - High Clarity Gels:
Ideal for creating clear water and water/alcohol-based gels. - Versatile Applications:
Functions as a viscosity adjuster, emulsion stabilizer, and gelling agent. - High Bulk Density & Low Dusting:
Easier to process and handle due to its physical properties. - Eco-Conscious Formulation:
Benzene-free and designed for environmentally friendly formulations.
Claims:
- Rapid and easy dispersion in water, reducing preparation time.
- Forms high-clarity gels suitable for various cosmetic applications.
- Enhances viscosity and stabilization in emulsions.
- Benzene-free composition aligns with eco-conscious formulation requirements.
Applications:
- Cosmetic Products:
- Clear gels for skincare and haircare.
- Alcohol-based formulations.
- Emulsion stabilization for creams, lotions, and sprays.
Technical and Formulation Data:
- INCI Name:
Carbomer - Appearance:
White powder - Recommended Usage Level:
0.05–1.0% - pH Compatibility:
Suitable for formulations across a wide pH range. - Viscosity (0.5% dispersion):
Up to 35,000 mPa·s (Brookfield RV, 20 rpm, 25°C)
Formulation Guidelines:
- Dispersion:
Add TEGO Carbomer 340 FD into the vortex of the agitating liquid early in the formulation process to ensure thorough wetting and dispersion. Use a propeller stirrer; avoid excessive shear to maintain viscosity. - Neutralization:
Neutralize at the end of the process to achieve uniform mixing and increase viscosity. Recommended neutralizers include triethanolamine, sodium hydroxide, or tetrahydroxypropyl ethylenediamine.
Packaging:
Available in 15 kg boxes (270 kg pallets).
Storage:
Store in dry, dark conditions. Use opened boxes immediately, as the product is hygroscopic.
Benefits Over Traditional Carbomers:
- Faster Processing:
Speeds up formulation steps compared to traditional carbomers like TEGO® Carbomer 140. - Simplified Process:
Eliminates delays associated with neutralizing phases, improving production efficiency. - Enhanced Clarity:
Produces clear, stable gels without turbidity.
Recommended Applications and Example Formulations:
- Conditioning Hair Gel (UM 118/5):
Combines TEGO Carbomer 340 FD with PEG-20 Glyceryl Laurate and Dimethicone Propyl PG-Betaine for high clarity and conditioning.
Process:
Mix water phase (with TEGO Carbomer 340 FD) and oil phase separately; combine and neutralize with sodium hydroxide to form a clear gel. - Hair “Repair” Leave-in Conditioner (WA 190/11):
Utilizes TEGO Carbomer 340 FD to add viscosity and stability to emulsions containing cyclopentasiloxane, Ceteareth-25, and Behentrimonium Chloride.
Process:
Disperse TEGO Carbomer 340 FD in water, combine heated phases, neutralize, and cool to room temperature.
Certifications and Safety:
Hazard Classification:
Not classified as hazardous.
Handling:
Avoid inhalation of dust and contact with skin, eyes, or mucous membranes. Use appropriate personal protective equipment.
Preservation:
Gels require the addition of preservatives to prevent microbial growth.
Environmental Stability:
Protect from moisture and store in original packaging.
